RAMANA PROJECT
RAMANA PROJECT
Reconstruction works in Ramana settlement have been completed: internal roads have been asphalted, walls and roofs have been renewed, and street lighting has been installed. The settlement’s Hasan bey Zardabi, Xanlar, Mirzaaga Aliyev, Abdurrahman bey Haqverdiyev streets, as well as the area surrounding the cemetery, have been fully renovated. The territory has also been cleared of waste.
Ramana settlement is rich in monuments that can be included in tourism routes across Absheron. One of them is Ramana Castle, located at the entrance of the settlement and notable for its impressive appearance. Believed to date back to the 12th–14th centuries, the castle stands on a high elevation. It is presumed that the castle, with walls reaching 15 meters in height, was built for defensive purposes and used as a palace during the Shirvanshahs State period. Certain scenes of the famous films Koroghlu, Nasimi, and Babek were shot at Ramana Castle.
Another ancient monument of Ramana is the Novruzqulu Bathhouse. Although four wells once operated inside the bathhouse, only three remain today. The bathhouse, named after Novruzqulu Babakishi oglu, is the only structure on the Absheron Peninsula whose documentation has been fully collected and officially confirmed. High-quality restoration work has been carried out on the building.
During the reconstruction process in Ramana, environmental protection and the improvement of the settlement’s ecological condition were among the priority considerations.
Work has also been carried out to increase employment among the population. A carpet-weaving facility and a retail store have been opened in the settlement. The newly established food and service facilities produce and sell goods. These establishments are equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to provide high-quality service and ensure customer comfort.
One of the projects implemented in Ramana is the vertical gardening initiative. The goal of the project is to support self-employment, help low-income families gain higher income and develop their household businesses, and contribute to the expansion of greenery, the development of plant cultivation, and the processing of agricultural products.
Ramana is also famous for its ovdans (underground water reservoirs). One of the restored historical monuments in the settlement is the water ovdan popularly known as the “40 Steps.” Ovdans are most commonly found across Azerbaijan, particularly on the Absheron Peninsula and nearby regions. Due to the scarcity of drinking water sources in these areas, the use of groundwater suitable for drinking became essential in the 16th–18th centuries, leading to the construction of ovdans. The construction of these structures continued until the 20th century.
To promote a healthy lifestyle and ensure efficient use of leisure time for Ramana residents, a Sports Center has been built in the settlement. The center features an indoor sports hall and a mini-football pitch.
