Renovation, Restoration, and Beautification Works in the Settlement of Mardakan
In recent years, the beautification and renovation - restoration works carried out in the settlement of Mardakan have been significant both in terms of preserving historical heritage and shaping a modern environment. Large-scale projects are being implemented in various directions across the settlement. Historical monuments are being restored, parks are being renewed, residential neighborhoods are being improved, and public infrastructure is being upgraded. The restoration of the Sheikh Kazim Bathhouse, the renewal of the surroundings of the Circular Mardakan Fortress and the modernization of Nizami Ganjavi Park in line with contemporary requirements have had a positive impact on the overall image of the settlement.
General Reconstruction Works in the Settlement
As part of the large-scale renovation works carried out in various streets and neighborhoods of the settlement, the overall appearance of the area has been renewed. Within the framework of reconstruction, some old and damaged pedestrian sidewalks have been repaired, infrastructure in residential neighborhoods has been restored, street and neighborhood entrances have been improved, building facades have been renewed, and new roof coverings have been installed. In many areas, structures that were in a completely hazardous condition have been rebuilt and adapted to modern urban aesthetics.
Restoration of the Sheikh Kazim Bathhouse
The historic Sheikh Kazim Bathhouse, dating back to the 17th century, had fallen into disuse due to years of neglect. Even the inscription in Arabic script on the monument had become difficult to read. Within the scope of the restoration works, the roof and interior of the bathhouse were cleared of construction waste and accumulated debris; new layers of expanded clay and concrete were applied to the roof; waterproofing works were carried out; the stone structures of the domes were restored; door and window units were renewed using solid wood materials; later illegally added structures built of cut stone were dismantled; damaged and missing stones of the facade were reworked; and the stone inscription was cleaned and restored.
Renewal of the Surroundings of the Circular Mardakan Fortress
The Circular Mardakan Fortress, dating back to the 13th century (also known as the Shikh Fortress), is one of the architectural monuments of the Shirvanshahs period. This historical monument, built in 1232 by the architect Abdulmajid, son of Masud, had long remained neglected.
According to the project, the area was transformed into a fully functional park space. While preserving the existing trees, new green belts were created; the walls surrounding the park on two sides were rebuilt; a new main entrance complex was established; the old sanitary facility was demolished and replaced with a modern security room and sanitary facilities; gazebos and recreation areas were arranged within the park; and three ancient wells located in the area were restored. As a result of these works, the surroundings of the historic fortress have been transformed into an environment that is attractive for tourism and convenient for local residents’ recreation.
Reconstruction of Nizami Ganjavi Park
The 3.5-hectare Nizami Ganjavi Park in the settlement of Mardakan has undergone complete reconstruction. Within the scope of the works, 51 new lighting poles were installed, 26 waste bins were replaced, 16 new benches were installed, a new fountain was built, the irrigation system and pump house were restored, the statue of Nizami Ganjavi was restored, and its pedestal was renewed. As a result, the park has become one of the most modern and functional recreation areas of the settlement.
These projects strengthen Mardakan’s tourism potential while also creating a more comfortable, safe, and aesthetically pleasing living environment for residents.
